exposition: PELLESTRINA AND HER LACE
Who, sailing in the lagoon from Venice to Chioggia, left the Lido, going over the mouth of the port of Malamocco, can’t help but admire that amazing sequence multicoloured houses, created by a "spontaneous" architecture, under sown by some manor houses, hanging towerbell, five churches and two "capitals" or small "parishes", three hundred years old and all summed up in one name: Pellestrina
This island, eleven kilometres long and wide up to 200 meters, the last bastion of the Municipality of Venice, goes to the mouth of the port of Chioggia ending with the lovely oasis of Ca 'Roman covered with a precious maquis, together with the famous "embankments" of the town, pharaonic works in Istria stone, swan song of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, built to protect the lagoon from the Adriatic Sea that caresses, or whips, depending on the moods, the island in all its length.
For generations, the island has seen the men engaged in fishing and women sitting outside their homes, to work with Tombolo to create beautiful lace thanks to its Fuselli: an ancient tradition born in the fifteenth century and developed in the island until the first World War.
Today there are just few women still passing this art, and to revive this ancient tradition.
It had been exposed in Pellestrina in June 2007, the longer lace created with the Tombolo in the world: “A record for Pellestrina”.
A long strip created by different hands, which have joined forces to create a common artifact that represents the culture, the identity and the landscape of the island.
The lace, made from October 2006 to May 2007, reached a length of 450 meters; involving 386 people for a total of 270 days of work, corresponding to 9200 hours, supported by a design phase documented on 63 drawings.
To achieve all this it was needed around 4632 fuselli and 368,400 meters of wire. It was attended by 18 groups from 10 different cities, among these were the core groups the island’s Associations and the Spanish Arenys de Munt.
The idea was matched by four artists, Lisa Castellani, Enrica Cavarzan, Maria Zanchi, Gloria-Safon Tria, supported by the Foundation “Pistoletto-Città for the art”, and it was collected from the Population Association in Island and from the ACS Embankments, site of the ancient school of lace Pellestrina, that still has a lot of students.
