1872,
the 23rd of June: Luigi Orione was born
at Pontecurone (Alessandria) and he was christened on the
following day.
1885,
the 14th of September: He is received among the Franciscan
monks of Voghera: he is discharged in June, 1866 because of
a serious illness which had been almost fatal to him.
1886,
the 4th of October: He enters Oratorio of Valdocco (Torino)
where he meets Don Bosco; he stays there three years.
1889,
the 16th of October: He enters the seminary of his parish,
Tortona (AL). He is an excellent pupil and works as a keeper
in the Cathedral.
1892,
the 2nd of March: he starts his work for the young: he gathers
boys both for play and catechism. On the 3rd of July the opening
of San Luigi Oratorio.
1893,
the 15th of October: Don Orione, aged 21, opens the first
Boarding School in the district of San Bernardino, Tortona.
1894,
the 15th of October: The College is moved into the more spacious
one of “Santa Chiara”; opening of Student Boarding
in Genova and Turin.
1895, the 13th of April: Don Luigi Orione is ordained priest.
1896,
October: He opens a House at Mornico Losana.
1898,
the 5th of August: He starts the publication of “The
Work of Divine Providence”. In September he is summoned
to Noto (Siracusa) by Monsignor Bandini; here he accepts San
Luigi Episcopal College and later the Agricultural Colony.
1899,
the 30th of July: the dressing of the first Hermits of Divine
Providence takes place. In October he opens San Romolo Boarding
School at Sanremo.
1901-1902,
he starts the Agricultural Colonies at Bagnorea, Cegni di
Varzi and, in Rome, Nunziatella, S. Giuseppe alla Balduina,
Santa Maria at Monte Mario.
1903,
the 21st of March: Igino Bandi, bishop of Tortona, gives his
approval of the Little Work.
1904,
May: the Mother House is finally moved to Emilia Street, 63
– Tortona and called “Convitto Paterno”.
He is given the direction of Sant’Anna dei Palafrenieri
Church, Vatican.
1905,
Don Orione starts his first printing house at Tortona.
1908,
the 25th of March: at the request of Pio X Don Orione starts
his ministry at Appio, a Roman district, the so- called “Roman
Patagonia”.
1909,
the 4th of January: he leaves for Sicily to bring the first,
urgent help after the terrible earthquake in Reggio and Messina;
he starts an Orphanage at Cassano Ionio.
1909,
the 15th of June: Pio X appoints him General Vicar of Messina
Diocese.
1911,
the 8th of December: he buys Villa Moffa, at Bra (CN): it
will be the Novitiate and Boarding School of the Little Work.
1912,
April: Don Orione can return to Tortona after three years
spent in Sicily. On the 19th of April, during a hearing he
takes the perpetual vows before Pope Pio X.
1913,
December: the first Missionaries leave for Brazil.
1915,
the 13th of January: another terrible earthquake at Avezzano;
Don Orione helps promptly and generously.
On the 29th of June: Don Orione founds the Congregation of
the Little Missionary Sisters of Charity. There is the opening
of the first Piccolo Cottolengo at Ameno (Novara).
1918,
the 29th of August: At Tortona he implores for the end of
the great world war and vows with the local population to
erect a sanctuary to Madonna della Guardia.
1921,
the 4th of August: Don Orione leaves for South America, Brazil,
Argentina, Uruguay. New Works: Agricultural Colony at Rafat
(Palestine); House of Preservation in Rio de Janeiro; Saint
Francis Parish and Boarding-School at Puerto Mar del Plata
; Marcos Paz Approved School. He comes back to Italy on the
4th of July, 1922.
1923,
First House in Poland, at Zdunska Wola; reopening of Eremo
di Sant’Alberto di Butrio where Friar Ave Maria arrives.
1924,
19th of March: Foundation of the Piccolo Cottolengo in Genova.
1925,
30th of June: he takes charge of an Orphanage at Acandia (Rodi).
1927,
the 15th of August: Foundation of the Sacramentine Blind Sisters
at Tortona.
1929,
He starts the publication of “Mater Dei” , a marian
periodical.
1931,
the 29th of August: Inauguration of the Madonna della Guardia
Sanctuary at Tortona.
1933, November: He starts the Piccolo Cottolengo in Milan.
1934,
First House in Jasper, Indiana, U.S.A.
On the 24th of September he leaves for a second journey to
Latin America.
1935,
the 18th of April: He starts the Piccolo Cottolengo at Claypole
(Buenos Aires), Argentina.
1936,
He starts the Little Work in Cardiff, England, and South Welles
to assist Italian emigrants. A house is opened also in Albania,
at Shijak, for the assistance to Italian workers.
1937,
the 24th of August: He comes back to Italy from South America.
1938,
Inauguration of the new Institutes “San Filippo Neri”
in Rome and “Artigianelli” at Alessandria. He
starts the Piccolo Cottolengo in Milan.
1939,
the 1st of April: Don Orione suffers from a grave angina pectoris
attack. He recovers. In May he starts Villa Santa Caterina
at Molassana, Genova, for noble decayed ladies; inauguration
of Madonna del Caravaggio Sanctuary, at Fumo (Pavia).
1940,
the 9th of February: a new angina pectoris attack threatens
Don Orione’s life; he receives the last sacraments;
he recovers a little. He spends his last days at Tortona.
On the 6th of March he visits the Guardia Sanctuary and the
various communities for the last time.
On the 8th of March he takes leaves from his brethern in Casa
Madre with the last “Good Night”.
On the 9th of March he leaves for Sanremo.
On the 12th of March: the last Saint Mass and last telegram
to the Pope; he returns to God with these words: “Jesus,
Jesus, Jesus…I am coming!”.
1980,
the 26th of October: Don Orione is proclaimed “blessed”
by Pope Giovanni Paolo II in Rome.
2004, the 16th
of May: Don Orione is proclaimed "Saint" by Pope
Giovanni Paolo II in Rome.
